‘Tis the Season to be Freezin’ - Part 2

As I write this I’m wearing a giant fleece parka and sitting next to a space heater. My hands are numb, so that’s my excuse for any typos. I feel like a sitcom character in the requisite episode where someone gets locked in a freezer overnight. I won’t die, and my ordeal with bring millions five people pleasure. The reason for all this is simply that I work for a company that does everything on the cheap, especially climate control.

I mentioned yesterday how during the whole summer the air conditioner wasn’t up to snuff. In fact, it was up to no good. The room temp was routinely 85°F. The water cooler was routinely broken. I was routinely hallucinating from heat stroke. Management routinely ignored the problem. Finally, a repairman was brought in. He must have been on the take because he deemed that there was nothing wrong with the A/C unit. The room is clearly sweltering, but the A/C isn’t broken. Well in that case I guess we need a second one. So they finally install a second A/C the last week of August. Right in the nick of time I’d say. I mean, the last week of summer is always worse than the preceding 12 weeks!

Well, now it’s fall and the mercury’s dropping, and the heat that was so abundant not four weeks ago has vanished. I can understand saving money on gas, what with these sky-high, war-induced oil prices, but not when the company is so nuts about “productivity.” Employees receive veiled threats about internet usage during “non-lunch” hours. I’ll check my email once an hour, which doesn’t really put a dent in my productivity. Today I’ve honestly spent twice that time just rubbing my hands together for warmth. Sure I could bring in an extra sweater, like they asked me to, but this isn’t fucking Alaska! It’s only 40 degrees out, not blizzared conditions. It shouldn’t be this cold in here yet.

I think I’ll go warm up in the street, in the rain, with an icy wind blowing up my shirt. It beats staying inside this frosty tomb.
