THE INTERNET – Flickr, photo sharing service to the stars web-savvy hipsters, has just announced they are leaving beta. Current pro users, those who actually paid for the service, are having their memberships and bandwidth doubled, and receiving two invitations for their friends to join the pro ranks.

This is sure to open up the floodgates as people are hard pressed to turn down anything free. The odds are these new accounts will be given to people that won’t use them nearly as much as the people giving them out, so it’s a good move for Flickr. More exposure, less effort per capita.

This free membership giveaway hearkens back to Gmail’s introduction last April. Look for gmailswap clones in the coming days that will enable people to barter for the free Flickr Pro accounts. I’d hate to see Flickr’s generosity be taken advantage of, but these are troubled times, with troubled souls roaming the internet.

Since pro accounts are already available to the public for $40, unlike Gmail was, the insane offers should be kept to a minimum, but there’s bound to some crazies. Look for offers of Bloc Party related merchandise and the ever-popular sexual favor.
