Yesterday Was Different

Right up there with Arbor Day, Secretary’s Day, Donate a Toe Day, Flag Day ranks as a pretty lackluster holiday. This article makes an impassioned plea to the contrary, but come on. “Flag” Day. Who are you kidding?

The article does shed light on a few things:

  • Yesterday was Flag Day, not Tuesday.
  • Betsy Ross is a false idol we are made to worship in schools. Francis Hopkinson actually made the first Old Glory. Betsy still made flags, for a living somehow, but didn’t create it.

How are people supposed to know Betsy Ross didn’t make the first American Flag, when that’s exactly what you learn in school? It’s such a widely held piece of insignificant trivia, that no one cares it’s not right. It does have a better ring than ‘Francis Hopkinson,’ that’s for damn sure. It’s just like how we tell kids in kindergarten that Christopher Columbus discovered America, or ROYGBIV is the correct order of colors in the rainbow, except those myths are eventually dispelled later on.
