Another Christmas has come and gone like a goldfish with a death wish. We all know it never lasts very long, is slightly disappointing, but are ready for another one some time in the future. Some thoughts:
- You can get anything on DVD now, including your most recent trip to the bathroom. Something about giving them as presents just seems like a cop out. It’s not at all hard to buy a DVD for someone, it’s hard not to. But then I realized it’s not so much different than giving someone a book. Both get used approximately once, DVDs possibly more so. Both cost about the same, hard covers more than DVDs, bargain DVDs less than paperbacks. Both end up in someone’s library, as a sort of badge that describes the person’s tastes. DVDs just seem to take less thought, because you just sit there and watch it for 2 hours, instead of taking time to read a book. But most books don’t make you think either. Why should a present even make you think? Guess this goes deeper than Christmas huh?
- As I pondered last year, New Year’s and Christmas are inextricably related, but off by about a week. My friend Jenny informed me that a child’s briss is 8 days after birth, which would put Christ’s at about January 1. Think about it.
- The upside down tree is the worst thing I’ve ever heard of. People are sheep and will buy anything. Reid Lyle puts it best, and I won’t even try to top it.
See you again soon for the post-New Year’s depression.
