Google bought @last Software, makers of intuitive 3D design application SketchUp, and is offering it for free download, just as it has done with Google Earth, and Picasa.
I like SketchUp’s interface a lot. It’s really easy to make (orthogonal) 3d shapes, and rotate your view, some basic things a lot of other programs can’t claim. But it does suffer in precision. You couldn’t for example, at least with the version I tried last year, make a box 12′ on a side. You would have to “eyeball” it.
I also noticed at the time of Google Earth’s release, there a was plugin for importing SketchUp models, so that you could view them in relation to actual physical surroundings. Needless to say, this is great for architects and designers, but it’s just plain cool besides. But SketchUp only had a limited trial period, and this feature was easy to try out. But that’s all changed now.
If only there were this many free software tools available when I were a kid, maybe I wouldn’t have ended up on the streets, pleasuring junkies for comic books. Oh wait, there were. But Google sure is spoiling me for paid software. Calendars, email, pictures, word processors, etc. All they need now is sohpisticated video editing software that lets me upload my movie to theaters across the country and earn a percentage of the box office gross.
