I had the best view of the fireworks this year of my entire life.
Growing up in the city, I’m accustomed to only seeing the top half of the fireworks, losing the rest to a silhouetted skyline. But this year I got hooked up by Larry, and got to see them at the Cabana restaurant on the third floor of Pier 17. Needless to say this was a primo vantage point. The barge was in clear view the whole time, and the restaurant’s balcony wasn’t even crowded. There was free food and drink as well, also without lines.
I didn’t even take that many pictures because I didn’t want to only experience this potential-once-in-a-lifetime event through my LCD viewfinder.
It’s pretty easy to become jaded seeing the world’s biggest fireworks show year after year, but there’s always one show-stopping new thing. This year it was the “jellyfish.” It seemed to keep it shape without exploding outright, and moved up and down before fading out. Definitely the most original thing since the “smiley face.” Last year’s “cube” made a comeback too.
