It’s the little things

I’ve been using Google Reader lately to aggregate my feeds, but it changed a lot with its latest release. Mostly for the better, but some basic things were still missing. Luckily, the Google Reader team has been hard at work, and acknowledged that with a frequently used program little annoyances become big over time.

Reader now let’s you tag feeds as you add them. A huge time saver from the old way, which forced you to go to the settings screen every time. You still can’t type in the tags though (you have to select them one at a time from a dropdown instead), which would save even more time.

One oddity that still remains is that while Google Reader let’s you tag feeds multiple times so you don’t have to organize them in mutually exclusive categories, these tags are shown as folders. For example, you can tag Gizmodo with “daily” tag as well as “tech”, but they show up in folders with these names. Folders typically are used to show mutually exclusive hierarchies. It’s also odd because Google has tended to use the word “label” instead of “tag” in their programs, such as Picasa and Google Search History.
