Firebox, not to be confused with Firefox, has released the retro handset of my dreams. The Phobile is based on the classic Western Electric phone from the 1940s, in all it’s cordful, black lacquered plastic glory.
I may have to plunk down the £35 (roughly 60 bucks USD) to be the most ironic person on the street. Imagine ambling down the thoroughfare, talking on a phone with a cord coming out of my pocket. The clincher would be the hanger on my shoulder to hang it when it’s not in use.
I had this idea a while ago, but never got around to making a prototype. Pokia did however, but never massed produced them. But the Holy Grail is still turning the handset itself into the mobile phone. That way the cord dangles freely, connected to nothing. You’ll look even crazier than the Wall Street brokers on their hands-free systems, doing their best Bellevue escapee impressions.
