You know how iPod has popularized shuffle? Yeah, you can randomly play any song on it like a 3 day long mix tape. Well imagine doing the same thing with TV. No commercials, no episodes you don’t want to see. It’s possible now because there are DVD Changers out there which hold up to 300 discs, and every TV show which had at least a modest cult following is being released on DVD. Imagine a marathon featuring episodes from (in no particuluar order) The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Critic, Knight Rider, SNL, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Da Ali G Show, The Young Ones, Family Guy, Futurama, Sealab 2021, Fawlty Towers, Chapelle’s Show, Black Adder, South Park, The A-Team, Garfield and Friends, etc. (Notice the lack of Friends. That shit sucked. I’m not even going to link to it.) The list goes on and on and will continue to go on until we’ve amused ourselves to death. Of course, the changer would have to be smart enough to sort out the episodes from the special features and other random crap. It’d also be nice if the interface were easy enough to use that you could set up playlists as well for when you don’t want to deal with the full, mind-boggling array of old TV shows. I’d say this puts TiVo to shame because you’re no longer dependent on the networks at all. TiVo can’t help you if all Fox is showing is later seasons of the Simpsons. Dear God, only the sweet release of death can save us from that black spot on American history.
